Well-thought out digital communications – @IDFSpokesperson

Israel launched a campaign in Gaza and have been using social media to communicate directly with a world audience about what they’ve done so far. They are using social platforms, but it is more analogous to a media outlet like AP or CNN providing breaking news than social engagement. There are a number of aspects to it that are impressive:

  • They realise that not all their audience will agree with them. This is what the Twitter bio section says: Official Israel Defense Forces Twitter: real-time information and updates from the IDF. (RT, following does not constitute endorsement)
  • They have tightly integrated across channels using a blog, Twitter, Facebook page and Flickr. They also made good use of hash-tags to accelerate the propagation of their content
  • We can infer from the way the content is coming through that they have put a good degree of thought into work flow with a combination of pre-prepared content and what must be quickly prepared and approved content – which must be challenging in a hierarchical environment of a military force
