Over the air report and mobile goings on
I attended the Over the Air conference on Friday about all things mobile development related. Highlights included an online white board that multiple people could draw on in real-time that utilised HTML 5 demo-ed by Ericsson Labs and a presentation by Bryan Reiger who argued that site development should be mobile first. The Ericsson Labs experiment inspired thoughts of whole new ways of working with clients that have been thus far resistant to the likes of Basecamp or Google apps. The thrust of Bryan Reiger’s argument in his presentation goes along the lines that mobile devices are the most ubiquitous internet capable devices in the world and dwarf the numbers of computer phone hybrids like the iPhone and the Nokia N900. A secondary benefit of building for the simplest device and then layering content is a simpler (better) user experience and a faster loading site. The big challenge of course is trying to do this for PR clients who expect builds to cost £2.50 and a bag of chips, want it yesterday and still expect it to be a Webby award-winning site. This week is Nokia World. I personally don’t have a ticket but would recommend that you follow @whatleydude and @nokiafirka on Twitter. Given that its a pivotal time for Nokia, they can’t be happy with Jemima Kiss’ evisceration of their services strategy on Friday and the boardroom musical chairs that have been happening since Friday last week. I am hoping for a worthy clamshell successor to the Nokia E90 that I can update the software on via my Mac and sync my data to it via my Mac without the whole phone going on the fritz.
