Journalists deserve low pay
I found a very interesting article in the Christian Science Monitor ‘Why journalists deserve low pay’ by Robert G. Picard is a professor of media economics at Sweden’s Jonkoping University which argues journalists add little economic value. It is an interesting walk through the moral and economic roles of journalism and the disconnect between journalism and the advertising that pays the bills.
The demise of the news business can be halted, but only if journalists commit to creating value for consumers and become more
involved in setting the course of their companies.
It was interesting that this article was published in the Christian Science Monitor which abandoned print ahead of many US news media as it tried to make ends meet. Do you think journalists deserve low pay? And if you accept that journalism has low economic value what does that mean for PR, (the lions share of which s about media relationships)?
